Work on Flint-area apprenticeship program wins statewide honor

Local leader in talent development was recently awarded one of the state’s highest honors for her service to Flint and the surrounding communities.

As the apprenticeship success coordinator for GST Michigan Works, Wanda Bigelow helps companies develop apprenticeship programs — and helps people in Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties get into the trade programs and into jobs.

Bigelow was awarded the “Shining Star” award by the Michigan Works Association during its annual conference in Kalamazoo this week.

“Wanda goes above and beyond the call of duty to educate herself, employers, job-seekers and fellow GST Michigan Works team members about apprenticeships,” said Jody Kerbyson, CEO of GST Michigan Works, which is headquartered in Flint. “Through her dedication, she has truly worked hard to own this role.”

Bigelow said she was grateful for the award — and for the ability to make a difference in so many people’s lives and businesses bottom lines.

“I am blessed to have a job that I love doing, working to make a difference for our company and customers is the number one priority for me,” she said. “Doing meaningful work, learning new things and having the tools to be successful are the most important motivators for me. I am lucky to work with a great team who supports, motivates, and communicates openly.”
