FLINT, Michigan — The Flint and Genesee Group just launched the new 'Make Your Move' talent search program with the goal of connecting people with jobs, and hopefully making their homes in Genesee County.
In 2020, the Flint and Genesee Group, along with the City of Flint and several other groups, teamed up to make the '
Forward Together' report. One of the main issues reported was the number of people leaving Genesee County compared to people coming in. The 'Make Your Move' program is the group's way of tackling this issue while making it a personal experience.
Brianna Mosier, the leader of the 'Make Your Move' project said, “We're losing residents by the 1000s, and so, with a project like this, it is a very slow burn. We don't expect to see 1000 new residents in the first three months. It's more important to us to make sure that this is just a personal experience for each individual.”
Right now, the program is focused on creating awareness for local employers and residents. The group partnered with a talent search agency
RoleCall, which works nationally to connect new residents with jobs. They are hoping for a lot of employers to respond for the best outcome for this program.
“This project in particular is really geared towards talent attraction and helping to tell the story of what it's like to live in Genesee County and work in Genesee County,” said Mosier.
Residents are able to sign up to be paired with someone using the program to help make incoming residents get a feel for what it’s like to live in Genesee County. Their correspondent can help answer any questions they have about the area. The goal is to make sure people feel supported and needed within the community.
“Our community champions are our biggest support system and advocates in the community so we're looking for local support to spread the message far and wide,” said Mosier.
The Flint & Genesee Group is encouraging more people to make their homes in Genesee County with the launch of its 'Make Your Move' talent search program.Another side of the project is to make people already living in Genesee County want to stay. They want to reach new and upcoming graduates from the many colleges in Flint who may not have a plan after graduation. Grads are most likely to stay in the community if they have a job lined up and have support from people already living here.
“'Make Your Move' also wants to reach people who may have moved away from the area but know what living here is like and already have a sense of the community.
“We have a lot of great professionals here in our community who maybe did leave for school and then go to the big city, Chicago or D.C., and for whatever reason found themselves home and are doing great things here. They're very successful, and they're helping to make this a better place for everyone,” Mosier said.
The Flint and Genesee Group has put a lot of work into making its
website easy to navigate in order for people to get exactly the information they are looking for. There are options to help people sign up to be connected with employers as well as profiles of people who currently live in Flint and want to share their stories.
There is also a section of all the entertainment, arts and culture, and outdoor adventures people can explore while in Flint.
“Every single interaction that you have, like at the coffee shop, at the gas station, you don't know if that's your neighbor, or if it's a visitor or someone who's thinking of moving here. And so that's one of the biggest ways that community members can help out is just by saying nice things about our community,” said Mosier.
