FLINT, Michigan — Picking the right school for your child can be a daunting task. Even if the school setting is a good fit, there may still be additional complementary resources a student needs outside of the classroom to keep up or succeed.
A new local nonprofit afterschool enrichment education center,
Inside Acceleration Tutoring Center, aims to help fill those gaps, setting the stage for future success in and out of the classroom.
Inside Acceleration Tutoring is preparing to open its doors to serve Flint area students at its
grand opening celebration on Saturday, July 19, from 2-4 PM. The center offers personalized 1.5-hour-long tutoring sessions in math, reading, and writing, using proven methods specifically tailored for Genesee County students from first through twelfth grade.
“We’re proud to be stepping up at a time when students and parents are actively searching for strong academic support systems,” says Esha Brown, owner of Inside Acceleration. “With a focus on equity, enrichment, and empowerment, Inside Acceleration offers more than tutoring — we’re building confidence, closing learning gaps, and giving students the boost they need to succeed.”
Brown says the tutoring center is neither a daycare center nor a place where students just work on their homework after school. On day one, students take diagnostic assessment tests showing what levels their current skills are, helping inform the tutors on what additional work they’ll need throughout the process.
Four days a week, students complete worksheets or online sessions at request, earning learning prizes throughout the unique curriculum. With individualized attention, targeted lessons, professional structure, marked progress, and feedback, students can learn teamwork, knowledge, problem-solving skills, achieve their potential, and excel in school.
However, the goal isn’t just to maintain proper reading, writing, or math levels; it’s also for long-term success, long past graduation day.
“A lot of adults already have a third-grade reading level, and we don’t want the next generation to keep that going on,” Brown says. “We’re here to close that gap, and make sure students are successful in life, getting into college, and starting their careers.”

Brown homeschooled her oldest child, who could read at one and do math at two years old. Some other parents expressed interest in having Brown teach their own children. After returning to the city of Flint, she made that idea a reality.
Having been a substitute teacher for about four years, she always loved teaching children. The veteran is also in school to be a physician assistant, but teaching has always felt natural to her. Her hope with Inside Acceleration is to let all students know that the center is a valuable tool for their educational pathways.
While there might be a misconception that tutoring is only needed for students who aren’t as smart as their peers or those falling behind in school, Brown knows it can be beneficial for all learners at all levels. At Inside Acceleration, staff aim to meet them where they are, continually raising them up, even providing mentors and internships for high school students.
“Sometimes, it’s hard to catch on during school — there are so many distractions, including educational and social distractions,” Brown says. “A teacher often only teaches one way, and it’s often up to the student as they’re learning to either catch on or not. The teacher can’t really stop and work with each individual person. I really feel like tutoring is the stepping stone.”

In the future, Brown hopes to partner with local school districts and learning centers to help pay for students to receive services here, and to eventually offer transportation to and from schools to the tutoring center.
In addition to the core subjects, Inside Acceleration also plans to provide workshops on American Sign Language (ASL), Spanish, and even Financial Literacy.
“ASL and Spanish have always been really dear to my heart, and I feel like everyone should know them. Those are important languages to know because it brings everyone in as a community to understand each other even more. Sadly, they don’t offer those in school, and most people don’t learn them unless they go to college and take a course. Children shouldn’t have to wait until they can afford a college class to know these languages.”
ASL workshops will be provided by certified ASL entrepreneurs working in the field, as well as one instructor who is deaf. Spanish language workshops will also be taught by Spanish-speaking instructors familiar with the culture.
“It’s one thing to learn Spanish from Duolingo, but it’s another thing to actually have a conversation and understand the different variants of Spanish when used in different cultures,” Brown says.
