FLINT, Michigan — Smiles were abundant at St. Luke’s N.E.W. Life Center for their first annual “Day of Support” for area women. Co-Founder and Director Sis Carol Weber envisioned empowering women through the teachings of Jesus Christ while providing much-needed resources.
Sis Carol added, “This event-filled morning intended to offer support to women, especially during the pandemic. Our goal was to gather them together and provide hope. So many women have been coming to the center and talking about how difficult the pandemic, water crisis, and violence have been for them. This event offered hope and respite time so they could go back home and be a positive presence to their family. If we heal the woman, we can heal the whole family.“
The day started with an inspirational bible lesson followed by a therapeutic pillow-making session and a professional makeup class.
New Jersey native Jocklyn Pierce-Mayfield has been beautifying women in the Flint area for years. She is the owner of Makeup By Jocklyn
, a makeup studio located inside the Ferris Wheel building in downtown Flint. She taught women the basics of makeup application and supplied all attendees with the necessities for complete face application, including eyelashes. She is also the C.E.O. of Makeup is My Life Cosmetics
which specializes in brow products, eyeshadow palettes, blush, and makeup brushes.
“It was important for me to participate in the “Day of Support” because I think all women want to feel beautiful and I specialize in building self-esteem and a sense of worth,” said Pierce-Mayfield.
Flint resident Della Thomas was a participant. “I’m not a rookie to applying makeup, but I learned some new techniques,” she said. “I’m not used to using primer and finishing spray, but I will consider purchasing some. I’m looking forward to the next class.”
