FLINT, Michigan—Berston Field House is celebrating Flint’s rich boxing history with an outdoor boxing showcase featuring fighters from across the state as well as Ohio and Kentucky.

The Back-to-School Boxing Showcase is an annual event at Berston Field House, but this is the first time it has been an outdoor event. The USA Boxing sanctioned event is from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Berston Field House, 3300 N. Saginaw St. The cost is a free will donation.

“We’re doing this for the community, to thank them and let them know we appreciate their support,” said Bryant Nolden, executive director of Berston Field House. “We want to make sure to keep the rich boxing history of Flint alive.”

Berston Field House first opened in 1923 and has since given a start to some of Michigan’s most notable athletes — including two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and reigning undisputed female middleweight champion of the world Claressa Shields.
