FLINT, Michigan — Systemic racism and economic barriers have long prevented marginalized communities from accessing opportunities to build wealth and achieve financial security. To address these issues, the local non-profit Mission Possible is introducing the Accelerated Saving and Asset Program (ASAP) to Flint.

The groundbreaking program is designed to help individuals and families in Flint save money, stabilize their finances, build wealth, and achieve significant financial goals to purchase assets.

ASAP aims to create a more equitable and inclusive environment, giving all community members the chance to succeed. Mission Possible and the ASAP Program are committed to dismantling these barriers and providing resources and support to the historically underserved.

“We expect ASAP to have a profound impact by enabling participants to acquire valuable assets that can transform their lives,” shares Gianna Oliver, Program Organizer. “Whether securing stable housing, reliable transportation, or launching a business, these assets can significantly improve financial security and quality of life. Ultimately, we hope to foster greater economic resilience and opportunity within our community.”

ASAP is a comprehensive year-long program to promote financial literacy in the Flint community. Participants save towards a specific financial goal over six months such as purchasing a home or a vehicle or starting/expanding a business.

The program offers a 4:1 match on savings up to $500. For instance, if you save $500, ASAP will match it with $2,000.

Additionally, participants will receive financial literacy workshops, coaching sessions, and asset-specific education. Monthly coaching sessions will help monitor progress, address challenges, and provide ongoing support. Mission Possibles’ staff will work closely with participants to set and achieve savings goals, offering guidance and encouragement along the way.

“The most rewarding aspect of ASAP will be witnessing the transformation in our participants,” says Oliver. “It will be incredible to see them gain confidence, achieve their financial goals, and improve their overall quality of life. Knowing that we’re helping to create lasting, positive change in the community is incredibly fulfilling for our team.”

The program is specifically designed for Flint residents with low to moderate incomes. Whether you’re looking to build wealth through homeownership, starting a business, or making a significant investment, ASAP’s mission is to support you at every step.

Oliver shared her sentiments regarding the program and why financial literacy is essential to Flint and all underserved communities.

“The future of ASAP looks bright. We envision expanding the range of assets participants can save for, including options like investment accounts and retirement savings,” she says. “We also aim to broaden our outreach to include more communities and increase the number of participants. Our ultimate goal is to create a sustainable model that can be replicated in other regions, empowering more individuals and families to build wealth and improve their quality of life. We’re excited to see how the program evolves and the lasting impact it will have on the community.”

The community can support ASAP in several ways such as becoming sponsors, offering volunteer expertise, or simply helping to spread the word.

ASAP also welcomes local businesses to partner to provide additional resources and opportunities for participants. Contact Mission Possible for more information if you’re interested in getting involved.

The program was made possible by a grant from the Poverty Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. Flower of Life, Financial Plus Credit Union, and Smok Cannabis.
