First-of-its-kind Flint Literary Festival highlights more than a dozen authors with Flint ties

FLINT, Michigan—Imagine. You have superhuman powers. You can defy gravity. You take off into the sky.

At any moment, you can go anywhere (and everywhere) you want.

You actually can. Just open a book.

The first Flint Literary Festival is looking to inspire with the theme “Flight” this weekend, July 21-22, at the Flint Public Library. It is free. A full schedule of events is available at www.flintliteraryfestival.org.

Gothic Funk Press, the Flint Public Library, and East Village Magazine partnered up to create this one-of-a-kind festival that will include authors reading their work, panel discussions, book sales, and an after-hours open mic night.

“We definitely keep a local focus. All of our featured readers have ties to Flint, which is really nice.” said Connor Coyne, a planning committee member. “We have two very Flint-specific panel discussions taking place and we’re really excited about that.”

More than a dozen authors will be on-hand during the event. The event opens with award winning author of “Swarm Theory” Christine Maul Rice and close with Christopher Paul Curtis, whose debut novel “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” also has become a popular story for stage and screen.

Panel discussions include a Living Literature panel focusing on student authors and featuring young people from the Flint Public Library Teen Writer’s Workshop.

“I want people to come and check it out. You can come up with the greatest program on the planet, but it’s the people in the room that make the difference. It’s the conversations that make it memorable and make it a success.”
