Free skating, lessons, showshoeing and more set for Adventures in Winterland

Genesee County Parks is looking to prove there is still fun to be had outside—even in winter.

Adventures in Winderland is back for a second year Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, in partnership with Flint Iceland Arenas, Commit to Fit, Iceland Competitive Edge Figure Skating Club. It will include free skating lessons, free skating, snowshoeing, cooking, ice skating obstacle course, and even an “Olympic” podium.

The event runs from 1-3 p.m. at Flint Iceland Arenas, 1160 Elms Road in Clayton Township. It is free and open to the public.

Nancy Edwards, the recreation programs and grants officer for Genesee County Parks, is a way for the community to get active during the winter months and to learn about some ways to stay healthy and fit.

The idea was first cooked up by Iceland Competitive Edge Figure Skating Club and they partnered with the parks to expand the event.

“We all know that it’s very tempting to stay indoors during the winter.” Edwards said. “We created Adventures in Winterland to lure people out of their houses so they could learn something new, but most of all, so they would have fun.”

Skating lessons will be given by Iceland Competitive Edge Figure Skating Club Members and local hockey players on a first-come, first-served basis. You can bring your own skates or the arena will have rental skates available for use for free.

Local vendors also will be on-hand as will Winter Nature Explorations with For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum and the Flint Firebirds’ mascot “Hot Wing.”

Attendees will have the chance to win free tickets to a Flint Firebirds game and take home a medal at the ice skating obstacle course.
